Constructed Drawing Project

Constructed Drawing Project

For this constructed drawing project, we went down to the riverbank to draw what was around us from observation. The images below are the photos i have taken of a few pages of my sketchbook showing my drawings and developing ideas for my final construction.

Throughout this project i chose to base my constructed drawing on texture rather than building my trees so the stand out from the background in a more 3D style, as other people did. I chose to make my work heavily textured as i was more interested in creating multiple textures using simple materials and getting different effects.

Out of all my initial sketches, i chose to create this as my final project piece as it was the most interesting out of all the drawings i did, i think this because it was drawn from and interesting viewpoint and i like how the trees get small as they get further away. As the trees get further away, i had to create different textures to show this. I have mainly used corrugated cardboard to create the trees as it was the best thing to create a bark like feel. I have also used string which i knotted and covered in brown packaging tape to create the bark of a tree which is more distant. The larger and closer tree is made from screwed up paper to give the viewer the idea that it is in the

foreground compared to the last tree.
I  have also used newspaper, wire, string and
sellotape in order to create this.

During this project i also studied a handful of artists in order to give me inspiration. I looked at the likes of Anthony Green, because of this interesting viewpoints, John Virtue because of his subject matter and colour scheme, which is simple and monochromatic as i was limited to working in only tonal colours. I also looked at Terry Setch and Anselm Kiefer because of the way they create work in a similar way to this- by using simple materials to have maximum impact on the viewer.
When doing this project i have learnt that to work on a very large scale is not a bad thing (as i am used to working on a small scale). I have also learnt that when working on something this scale, up close it does not look as good as it could be, but when you stand away from it, it looks better than expected. This photo on the right is of my final sketch of what i wanted to build, with details of how i will create the trees in different ways which add perspective to the overall piece. The page after this, is of my experimentation with multiple different thicknesses, colours and textures of brown paper that i could use to add perspective so the closest tree was more textured and three dimensional compared to the last tree.
This next double page shows my photographs of the different stages when building my constructed drawing, and of all the details incorporated into it.
Overall, when looking at these stages from beginning to end of this mini project, i think that i have created a effective final piece which for fills all the objectives needed, and i have also pushed myself into doing something i am not usually used to doing which has expanded my abilities for future projects.
